Hastings seafront |
Battle is a few miles north of Hastings on the eastern edge of Sussex and is dominated by its Abbey, which is situated at the lower end of the High Street. Battle Abbey was built by William the Conqueror to commemorate the terrible loss of life at the Battle of Hastings (it was fought here, not Hastings). The site is dubbed the birthplace of England because this battle formed the future of modern England and was from then on ruled under one King. There is a comprehensive exhibition and audio tour of the battle.

the
Bayeux Tapestry |
After the famous Battle of Hastings, the Normans constructed their first castle on English soil. It commanded a panoramic view of the sea line as well as the coastal plains of this part of southern England. Today the castle is home to the 1066 story and visitors are taken on a journey to the castle keep where a multi-media display even brings poor King Harold to life. Hastings the old fishing town is a great seaside resort to visit with much to do and see, and a great place for fish and chips.

Bodiam Castle |
Bodiam Castle is one of the most famous and evocative castles in Britain, built in 1385 as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the moat. Enough of the interior survives to give an impression of castle life. There are spiral staircases and battlements to explore and wonderful views of the Rother Valley from the top of the towers. Enjoy a drink in the Wharf Tea room while your there.
